Referencing a mystic text (The Cloud of Unknowing) written by an anonymous monk in the 14th century, this exhibition is the product of Evan Mann's explorations of faith in a post-modern world, where knowledge abounds and the reverence for mystery shrivels away in the corner.
The otherworldly forms displayed within are an attempt to create without reference.
This effort and attempt, however paradoxical, fails. Thus a space is generated for viewers to confront and embrace the disquieting beauty of the unrevealed and unfamiliar. The cloud, abounding with historical and contemporary context, becomes a trope for the blurry distinctions of faith, knowledge, and the uncanny.
This video is documentation of a relational aesthetics/performance piece that took place during a graduate critique at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). The set for this performance was also featured in the video Real Ethereal.
